Description of Speech and Language Services
Description of Speech and Language Services:
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) work with children from preschool through grade 12 in the public school setting who have significant communication problems that affect their success in classroom activities, social interaction, literacy and learning. The SLP is an integral part of the educational team, developing and implementing plans that support student communication skills in the classroom.
Communication disorders include difficulties with:
1. Receptive (comprehension) language
2. Expressive (oral expression) language
3. Articulation and/or sound development
4. Fluency (stuttering)
5. Voice
Students are identified for speech or language services through the special education referral process. These services are available at all SEK Interlocal sites. If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language development, contact your child’s teacher or local school speech-language pathologist.
