Important Kansas School News

Changing delivery in instruction to students.

At 4:00 today, Governor Laura Kelly announced that school as we know it will be changing for the remainder of this school year for all of Kansas Schools. With this recommendation as well as our own concern for the safety and well-being of our students and families, all Interlocal member districts’ traditional school days will be adjusted for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. As of today, we cannot tell you what future learning will look like, but continuous learning opportunities will be developed and implemented in the near future. We understand this brings many questions and concerns from our community. Interlocal Leadership, will follow KSDE guidance in partnership with our member district superintendents, and have started working through our next steps as an organization.

Here is what we know today:

  • Spring Break, March 23-27, will remain student and staff time off as scheduled.
  • The following week, March 30-April 3, will be a planning week for our professional staff to participate in the development of a continuous learning plan for students with exceptionalities. This may be in person with groups remaining at 10 or less, or via Online. Please continue to check your email for dates and times for planning activities.
  • If you are an Inclusion/Resource special education teacher assigned to a district, you will be required to participate and attend your district planning meetings. Your district will contact you with details or you may reach out to your building principal. If you are a related service provider, self-contained low incidence/autism, early childhood special ed teacher, gifted facilitator, or work in an Interlocal facility, we will have dates for you to attend and plan continuous learning activities for your students. Please continue to check your email for dates and times.
  • As part of KSDE’s waiver plan, schools will continue to pay their classified and professional staff. However, job duties, work requirements, and descriptions will change.
  • Classified staff may be required to report to work. Further information will be provided when we know more details.
  • At this time, the State and Federal department of education is requiring us to continue to meet all IDEA timelines. As further updates are released, we will communicate those with you.
  • The SEK Interlocal #637 will make every effort to provide opportunities to our students for continual learning with the guidelines provided by KDHE and KSDE.

We ask for your patience as we navigate this unprecedented situation and work through additional details. As we have more specifics about what services we will be able to provide for students and families in need during this closure, we will communicate further. Please continue to check your email regularly.
